Trade Deadline Review
Well, it has come and gone.. thats right, trading has been frozen and teams are locked in for their playoff runs. Some teams will be making the playoffs, while other teams will be sitting at home watching those teams. There were some big deals that went down in the league just before the deadline ended, and I am here to review those deals.
Has Shawn Marion finally found a home?
Just before the trade deadline a deal went through that sent Shawn Marion along with Raymond Felton from Houston to Denver. In return, Houston received All-Sim League performer Steve Nash. Yup, thats it. Marion and Felton for Nash. If you are trying to do the math, so am I. Denver receives two quality starters for the aging Nash. This could help Denver in moving up the playoff seedings, but does it help Houston that much. Denver can now put out a starting lineup consisting of Raymond Felton, Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudamire, and Andrew Bogut. This is a very solid lineup and one that can could win the Northwest Division. In fact, book it, Denver will win the Northwest Division with this lineup.
Houston had an allstar cast, one of the better starting lineups in the league, and a very good playoff seeding coming in to this deal. What will be the ramifications of this trade? He will have Steve Nash leading the charge for his team, but there will now be a gap in the PF position. On a positive note, he doesnt have to worry about resigning Marion or Felton, but is that worth losing a shot at a championship this year? I guess we will see, as the playoffs are fastly approaching.
Shawn Marion is looking forward to leading the Nuggets to their division title
Nash is tired and aging, but can he help lead the Rockets?
Sheed to the Bucks
In another trade, Rasheed Wallace was traded to Milwaukee along with Stephen Jackson and Jason Maxiel. This package of scoring prowess and a young stud netted Chicago Emeka Okafor and Ron Artest. This is a very even deal in my eyes and one that will help both of these teams out for the playoff run.
The Bucks traded their PF and SF for another set of forwards, but they also gain Jason Maxiel. This trade not only gives them firepower for this year, but also for years to come. They should be better off in the stretch run, but Maxiel gives another young gun to team with Roy Hibbert downlow in the years to come.
Chicago nets Okafor and Artest, and this solidifies a very good starting lineup. This team gets two great defensive players and makes themselves a very good defensive team. Okafor gives the Bulls a starting center that they have coveted for a long time. He may be the missing piece that will help this Bulls squad win the Eastern Conference. This team plays big and will play hard. This is not a soft team, and one that you do not want to meet in the playoffs. With a front court of Baby Al Harrington, K-Mart, and now Emeka-watch out, this is one of the best front courts in the league. Can this team make a run at the East and take down heavily favored Miami.... I dont know, but they got themselves closer with this deal.
Will Sheed fit in with the Bucks...
Will another banner hang in Chicago this year??
Can AI help the struggling Wolves?
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been THE most disappointing team in the league, bar none. This team is littered with allstars, but they cannot seem to get wins. This team has a great point guard in Deron Williams and a great big man in Al Jefferson. Now, this team has added one of the most prolific scorers that the NBA has ever seen in Allen Iverson. For AI, Minny gave up hometown favorite YI, Cuttino Mobley, and Corey Maggette. Magette could not be the scoring thread that Minny thought he would be; so they bring in AI. Can AI help bring Minny back into the playoff hunt? I dont see it, but there is no reason that they should not. If this team does make the playoffs, watch out for them! They will cause matchup problems with any team, and Deron Williams to AI sounds so very sweet.
Iverson looks to flex his muscle in Minny
These were some of the deals that went through at the end of the trading deadline, with many teams looking to help out their cause for a playoff push. Some teams made some good moves, while other teams had me wondering....
Winners at Deadline
Minnesota-AI will help any team score
Chicago-Can their revamped lineup challenge Miami in the East
Denver-Getting Marion and Felton for Nash is a steal and willhelp this team win their division
Losers
Houston-This team has totally been changed from a team that could have won it all. The gm has traded cap space next year for an opportunity to win this year... that is questionable to me, but maybe he has a plan.
Teams that didnt make moves- There are some teams out there that needed to make moves to be competitive, but these teams will not move up due to staying put
